Today is Thanksgiving in the United States. It’s when we gather with friends and family and give thanks for what we have. Some of us have large family dinners with turkey and side dishes. We also watch football on TV. The holiday also falls during the November TV sweeps period so many shows have episodes that have a Thanksgiving theme. My all time favorite is an episode of the sitcom WKRP in Cincinnati titled “Turkeys Away”.

Are War Movies Appropriate For Memorial Day?

image of The Green Berets (1968) posterSince today is Memorial Day, you can be sure that one of the billions of cable channels will be showing war movies either all day or most of the day. One I saw a day or two ago is The Green Berets (1968) which was John Wayne’s love letter to the Vietnam War. While the action in the film is entertaining, Wayne’s attempt to include his political ideas misses the mark for me. That got me thinking about war films and if they are appropriate to show on a holiday meant to honor those who served and/or died for the country. I think it depends.

Elegantly Wasted for the holiday

The 4th of July was always a fun holiday for me and still is. From the cook outs, swimming, and fireworks it is always a good time. Sometimes though if you are elegantly wasted (ie. being functional) driving and fireworks are something you need to avoid. Be safe and here is a clip from INXS:
