July 27th marked the 30th anniversary of the first album by Madonna. The self-titled debut included hits ‘Holiday’, ‘Lucky Star’, and ‘Borderline’. I love those tunes and the album, but my favorite tune is ‘Burning Up’. I love the music and the video wasn’t bad either. I would like any song that had Madonna dancing on the street.
Neil Tennant & Chris Lowe – Pet Shop Boys (circa 1986)
I saw on the Intertubes that the Pet Shop Boys announced that a new album will be released in September (“Elysium”) and they released the first single with a video today. It is titled “Invisible”. That got me thinking about their first album “Please” that I bought on cassette back in 1986. I love the whole album but one of my favorite early PSB songs is “Later Tonight” which is the 10th track from that album.
I was following my usual Saturday night routine. Watched “Promo West Live!” and searched YouTube for a video for a band that caught my fancy. Well this past Saturday I found Love Grenades by accident and I fell in love with their music. I have wore out this particular clip titled “Young Lovers” and I hope you won’t be able to get it out of your head.
Milk Inc and Linda Mertens sets me on Fire
I try to experience music from other countries. YouTube and other sources help by letting me work around the corporate media here in the states that limit the market to those groups it wants to promote. Milk Inc. is a Euro House band from Belgium that has a vocalist named Linda Mertens who sings in English. It was a pleasant find for me.
Some house bands will sample a vocal and use it in the music but Mertens is a full time vocalist. House music sometimes can get pretty monotonous which is the point if you’re dancing in a club but I like how they make radio friendly songs that keep the song from getting boring. I could listen to this group all day long or dance to them all night.
The blond haired guy in the video is the leader of the band Regi Penxten. He sticks to playing the synthesizer.
