Two NBC shows that were the last to arrive for the fall season started Friday October 28. “Chuck” returned for what will be its fifth and final season. “Grimm” is a new show that is a modern take of the Brother’s Grimm fairy tales as police procedural. This is an odd pairing on one of the deadest nights of the TV schedule. I was glad to see Chuck come back and have a mixed response to Grimm. Continue reading →
One of my favorite TV shows this year is “Chuck” on NBC.
“Chuck” is a comedic take on the classic spy TV shows. It’s the 2008 version of “Get Smart”. Zachary Levi plays Chuck Bartowski, a computer nerd who works at the local mega-electronic store Buy More. It seems his friend in college, Bryce Larkin, became a rogue spy and sent the contents of a secret government database to Chuck in an e-mail. Chuck read the message and had his brain imprinted with all of the government’s spy secrets. Larkin also blew up the computer holding the data, so Chuck has the only copy of the information.
Yvonne Strahovski, plays Sarah Walker, a CIA agent sent to protect Chuck and his brain. The cover she uses is working in a yogurt stand and she and Chuck pretend to be an item. Meanwhile John Casey, a NSA agent, played by Adam Baldwin, is also suppose to protect Chuck but also is ordered to kill Chuck if and when the government rebuilds its spy computer.
Others in the cast include Chuck’s sister Ellie and her fiance Captain Awesome – yes that is his name on the show, and the gang who work at the Buy More with Chuck. None of them have a clue as to Chuck’s spy work.
The show has a good balance of comedy, drama, action, and pathos.
Here is a video filmed at the show’s panel talk at the recent Comic-Con which included some scenes from the first few episodes of Season 2.
