created image for the Fall TV PreviewThe fall TV season officially starts next week and I wish I was more excited by the new shows, but I’m not. I can’t wait for the return of some favorite shows but there are few new shows I think I’ll be watching all season.

We are a month into the new television season and it’s going about how I expected it. Some of the shows I didn’t care for I didn’t like and some got canceled right away and the ones I thought I would like, I did. There were a couple of new shows that I feel broke out from the crowd and one still to be seen.

ABC’s 2013 Upfront Least Interesting So Far

Posted on by

created graphic for ABC Fall TV PreviewI wasn’t that enthused with the many new shows ABC presented at their upfront presentation on Tuesday. Most of them were high concept low sustainability which means they would work as a movie or limited series but I don’t see them getting past the novelty. The only shows that interested me were Back in the Game, The Goldbergs, Trophy Wife, and Killer Women. ABC’s slate is the least interesting to me of the three networks I’ve reviewed so far.

Some TV shows canceled this week
Shows I watched that were canceled this week (clockwise from l to r) Body of Proof, Whitney, Vegas, & Happy Endings

Next week the networks will be presenting their new schedules for the 2013-2014 TV season. In order to make room for new shows, the networks have to cancel current shows. This time of year is tough for me because they will always cancel a show I liked or not cancel a show I hated. Here are some thoughts on a selected list of shows that I watched and were canceled.

The Taste Is A Cooking Contest That Levels The Playing Field

logo for the show The TasteSinging talent shows not only allowed little to no talent singers to get on TV, it also made the competition format a trendy way to do a reality talent show. It has been used in cooking shows like Top Chef and Chopped and now shows up on the new ABC show The Taste. The twist is similar to the NBC singing talent show The Voice where the judges pick a team based on a blind test. The Taste uses a single blind taste of a dish. The two hour first show was a bit much, but I liked what I saw and might tune in again.

My TV Mid-Season Report

created featured image for TV Mid-Season reportDecember to the beginning of the new year is usually the time the TV networks take a break from showing new episodes of shows. I decided to revisit some of the shows I highlighted back in August and returning shows I wanted to see again and give them a grade based on how they have been so far this season. As always YMMV.

Castle Episode Made My Head Hurt

Nathan Fillion, as Richard Castle, shooting a gun

I’m a fan of Castle on ABC. I like the tone of the procedural with bits of funny sprinkled within well thought out plots that keep me guessing. That was until the episode this past Monday 10/29 titled ‘Probable Cause‘. While the funny was still around, the plot of the episode as well as the ending just didn’t meet the usual level I expect from the show.

Fall TV Preview: ABC

Posted on by

image of Fall TV Preview on ABCThe 2012-2013 TV season starts in full in September so I wanted to post my thoughts on what new shows interest me. Just remember these thoughts are based on the show information and available video like sneak peaks and trailers. Although I find these shows interesting now, once the season begins and I see the shows in season I may change my mind.

ABC has only has one show that I think looks interesting for the new season. The network seems to have the weakest slate of new shows this coming fall with a better shows coming later in the season.
