Lake Street Dive is a Jazzy Pop Treat

cover to new Lake Street Dive albumThe other day I caught Lake Street Dive (LSD) on the Colbert Report show and checked out a video of the song they did. Loved it. They have a pop-jazz mix going on that sounds fresh. Their new album, coming out soon, ‘Bad Self Portraits’ has some great original tunes like the title song, ‘Rabid Animal’, and the tune that brought me into the fold – ‘You Go Down Smooth.’

Dum Dum Girls

I got to listen to the newest album from Dum Dum Girls, ‘Too True’, after hearing them play on the Late Show with David Letterman show the other day. Loved the whole album. Of course I’m a sucker for anything with an 80s sound. The song they played on Letterman, ‘Rimbaud Eyes’ sounded like Siouxsie and the Banshees but the tune that became my favorite is ‘Lost Boys and Girls Club’. Enjoy

No I Don’t Trust Andrew Mayne

Andrew Mayne

Andrew Mayne is a magician, illusion designer and filmmaker. He has worked for Penn & Teller and the Amazing Randi. He has a new show on A&E titled ‘Don’t Trust Andrew Mayne‘. I normally like magic shows but for some reason Mayne’s show rubs me the wrong way. The way the show is shot and edited actually makes the illusions seem fake or staged.

Washed Out Is Not A Wash Out

album cover showing differnt flowers in a pattern with the word Paracosm in white outlined block textOnce again the late night TV talk shows introduce me to music that I didn’t know about and now like. Washed Out is a singer-songwriter and record producer whose music reminds me of Lush with a touch of Portishead. He performed the single ‘All I Know’ on Late Night with David Letterman on Tuesday January 7th and it blew me away.

Intelligence Is A Popcorn Action Spy Show

Josh Holloway and Meghan Ory in a scene from the pilot of ‘Intelligence’

Tuesday night I got to watch the pilot episode of Intelligence on CBS. This was one of the mid-season shows I’ve been waiting to start and now that it is here, I enjoyed it. It reminded me of the classic The Six Million Dollar Man show from back in the 1970s. Although the main character in this new show doesn’t have super human strength, one of the plot lines is the guy dealing with the technology he has in his brain. You should check it out if you can.

Most Cable Channels Are Worthless

Posted on by

logo for Rehab Addicy on DIY channelCable TV is expensive. Most standard packages include hundreds of channels but you have to ask yourself, are those channels worth it. The current pricing scheme the industry uses means your hundred dollar payment supports a lot of filler material that seem to me to be only a video version of radio – something you turn on for background noise when cleaning the house or changing the oil in your car. Most cable channels aren’t worth your time or expense.

Who Knew There Was More To Career Opportunities Than Jennifer Connelly Roller Skating?

I could watch an entire movie of just this

I swear, as minute after minute ticked off as I re-watched the 1991 comedy ‘Career Opportunities‘, I kept saying to myself: ‘where is the roller skating?’ Of course how I remembered the film had nothing to do with how the film actually plays out. I could have sworn it was 83 minutes of Jennifer Connelly roller skating around a Target store – who knew that other people were in the film.

Luscious Jackson – Gabby Glaser, Jill Cunniff, and Kate Schellenbach

While checking out the guest list for the Monday 11/18 edition of the Late Show with David Letterman, I noticed the musical guest was listed as Luscious Jackson. What?? They were one of my favorite bands back in the late 90s and I thought they broke up years ago. Sure enough they released their first album in 14 years titled ‘Magic Hour’ and it is as great as their albums back in the day. I’m deeply in love with the track they played Monday night ‘Are You Ready’.
