Another new favorite ad of mine is from Oscar Mayer. The ad has a Grandpa who doesn’t hold back in his interactions with his family and grandchildren. The guy has some great lines. I think buying sliced ham in a container is too expensive with a lot of wasteful packaging but the ad was funny.

Blue Monday is 30

New Order today
A friend posted on Facebook that Blue Monday a song by the techno group New Order was released today in 1983. Thirty years ago?!? I am sooooo old. I remember when the song came out and I wanted to hear it on a loop forever – that’s how great and ground breaking it was then. It changed my taste in music for the better.

Oscars Were Actually Entertaining This Year
I wasn’t going to spend time watching the 85th Academy Awards show this year but it sucked me in and I did end up watching the full 3 hour plus marathon. It turned out to be pretty entertaining. Of course the show is a nerd prom for the Hollywood elite but the producers decided to remember us slubs who watch from home and they also used it as a chance to plug the other shows they produced. I also thought Seth MacFarlane decent for his first time as host.

More Interesting Than The Awards Themselves
Awards shows bore me. Either the people who I want to win don’t or the awards are kind of faked like the Golden Globes. The SAG Awards held on Sunday night is another opportunity for the best of Hollywood to get dressed up and party. Downton Abbey won for best ensemble cast in a drama which was a bit of shocker. My favorite part is the red carpet and seeing what different people picked to wear to the event. Here is a gallery of the looks that caught my eye or someone I support as a fan. For me the best look was from Jennifer Lawrence but YMMV.

CBS’ Con Job Known As Big Brother
If you’re an intelligent viewer then you should know that a majority of what passes as reality TV is actually scripted and planned out by the producers. One such con job is Big Brother on CBS. For years, what is shown on the network is not quite what really happens in the house. This week the producers really went over board to snow the viewing public.

If It’s The Olympics Then Here Comes The Coverage Complainers
The 2012 Summer Olympics started this week in London. NBC is the broadcasting rights holder for the United States. It announced that it would provide 5,535 hours of coverage of the London Olympics over the various NBC/Universal channels and for the first time comprehensive streaming on the NBC Olympics website. But starting with the opening ceremonies the complainers have started complaining about the coverage. They do make some points but a couple of the major complaints are wrong headed.

For A Poor Man, The Tony Awards Are Great Fun

Sutton Foster singing in 2011 Tony Awards
I don’t get to see Broadway shows in person and I’ve never been to the actual Broadway – yet. But each year I check out the Tony awards shown on CBS. It is my chance to sample the best of Broadway from my couch. I have some favorite performances and hope that the 2012 edition will add to them.

Are War Movies Appropriate For Memorial Day?
Since today is Memorial Day, you can be sure that one of the billions of cable channels will be showing war movies either all day or most of the day. One I saw a day or two ago is The Green Berets (1968) which was John Wayne’s love letter to the Vietnam War. While the action in the film is entertaining, Wayne’s attempt to include his political ideas misses the mark for me. That got me thinking about war films and if they are appropriate to show on a holiday meant to honor those who served and/or died for the country. I think it depends.
