I didn’t care for the sitcom ‘2 Broke Girls‘ that debuted on CBS last season. The plots were tired, the jokes were obvious, and the acting generally was bad. The other night I watched another episode and while the show has shown some improvement since season 1, Kat Dennings, who plays Max, is the weak link on the show and it’s just a deal breaker for me.
Her line readings are terrible. Normally you aren’t suppose to know an actor is reciting a line and it should sound like natural speech, but Dennings’ readings don’t sound natural. I know she can act so maybe she hates the material and is only giving a half-assed performance. The lines given are wooden and said with a smug smirk all the time like she is pleased she did it. I just can’t stand the show because of it.
Dennings’ line readings are so bad that it makes Matthew Moy’s diner owner Han Lee sound Shakespearean in comparison.
Here is a short clip of an example of Dennings’ usual wooden performance on the show:
I was annoyed by her line reading at the start of the show but new shows usually improve season to season as the actors get more comfortable with their characters. Compare the first season of “Star Trek: The Next Generation” with season 2 and beyond. I really have a tough time watching ST:TNG episodes from the 1st season. On 2 Broke Girls, Dennings hasn’t improved and we are half way through season 2.
Granted the show has other problems like trying too hard to be shocking but if the actors suck the rest of it is hard to ignore.
